College sneaks up on us. Before we know it, deadlines are coming up, essays are being drafted, and finances are being examined to make way for the big event of heading off to college.
I’m Alex Ellison, founder of Dunce College Planning. As a parent myself, I understand how fast time flies.
The college planning process can be overwhelming. Many options out there for assistance can seem arduous and only add to the confusion.
This is what the ‘Skinny Consult’ is for.
Maybe you’re not in need of a comprehensive college readiness program. Perhaps all you want is a quick (albeit thorough) plan. A roadmap, if you will, to show you the trajectory your high school student can use on the pathway to college.
You want a fully customized, comprehensive college plan… In an afternoon.
Before we go any further, in case you aren’t familiar with our work, we do things a little differently. Our goal is not to make students fit into a specific college; our goal is to help students find the perfect fit. We take a more lighthearted approach to the process and have found students work better in this atmosphere.
How this works
The Skinny Consult is a 5-step process…
Step 1: Application/Questionnaire – First thing’s first. We need to know some basic information about you, your family, and your journey. The first thing you’ll do is have your student fill out an application/questionnaire. We suggest they set aside an hour or so to do this as thoroughly as possible. The more we know about your student, the better we can serve them.
Step 2: At-Home Assessment – Once your consult is booked, we’ll send you access to an online aptitude and interest assessment which your student will be required to complete 48 hours before the meeting. This shows us your student’s passions, strengths, and superpowers so we can make sure they’re putting their focus in the right areas.
Step 3: The Consult – The consult is strictly between the student and us. We’ll bring the parents in on the follow-up session below. On the day of your consult, we’ll sit down for a 2-hour online video conference (using Zoom) to go over the assessment results, get to know your student and his/her goals, and discuss possible pathways.
Step 4: Your Report – A week after our meeting, you’ll receive an in-depth report that will give you and your student a roadmap that will guide them through high school towards the perfect-fit college. We’ll recommend several colleges we feel would be great fits and provide a road map to get there. Here’s what the report will cover:
- A summary of strengths
- A summary of interests
- How to put your plan into practice
- Job shadowing and mentoring recommendations
- Volunteer opportunity recommendations
- Extracurricular involvement recommendations
- Summer program recommendations
- Academic recommendations
- Test-prep recommendations
- Gap year recommendations
- College recommendations
- Financial Aid recommendations
Step 5: Follow-Up Session – After going over the report, we’ll schedule a 1-hour session to follow up on everything and answer any questions you may have.
