Intro (from Alex):
When people ask me the story of Dunce and why I started it, I can’t help but tell the story of my husband…
My husband, Jonas, was a decent student in middle school. Then, his mom passed away after a long battle with breast cancer when he was 16. (This was after his dad lost his business and their house was foreclosed on… Yyyeah.)
His grades, and his self-esteem, plummeted. Teachers left comments like, “Does not try hard enough” “Absent-minded” or “Isn’t engaged in class“.
Gee, I wonder why!?
Unlike many kids who grow up in poverty and lose a parent at a young age, Jonas did not get involved with drugs or crime or any other deplorable activity. Instead, he taught himself stuff. Lots of stuff. He tried community college, but didn’t like it. So he continued to teach himself more interesting things.
Fast forward to today, Jonas is fully self-educated. He is now a respected performance coach, writer, blogger and mentor for businesses and creatives. I’ve asked Jonas to help with workshops and retreats, which has been a lot of fun. My students have come back telling me, “your husband is so cool”. I agree, but please, not as cool as me… 😜
As more and more young people walk into Dunce Labs with heavy loads to carry and stress getting the best of them, I’ve asked my better half to devote more time to Dunce in order to offer more support and coaching to our brilliant students. The work he has been doing with clients around the world is so needed right here.
So, there you have it. The coolest Dunce I’ve ever met will now be available to motivate, inspire and coach for our student body here at Dunce.
Now, I’ll let him take it from here…

Wow, Alex, that was very nice – wish you were that nice to me all the time, sheesh 😘
Like Alex said, I’ve gotten to know a handful of you through writing workshops and in passing, but I’m beyond excited to be hanging out with you more and helping you on a deeper level here at Dunce.
As for what I do, I’m a performance coach. This means I help people/organizations with the thoughts running through their heads to make sure they’re serving them in the highest way (and therefore, they perform better in life/work/on the field). I also write a popular daily blog called Higher Thoughts and am a regular contributor to the Huffington Post.
As for my role in Dunce, I see Alex as the ultimate mentor and coach for helping you do the right things at the right time and keeping you on track (the outside-stuff). I see my role as helping you with your inner-game (otherwise known as your ‘head game’).
High school is an overwhelming time. Especially today with ever-increasing demands from home, school, and the world at large. It’s easy to lose yourself. My goal is to help you realize that you have more influence than you realize over your world. I’m here to help you access your innate well-being so your time spent in high school is more fulfilling, enjoyable, and memorable. And I’ll be helping you access your creative superpowers at will – a useful tool that will help you long after high school.
I’ll be meeting with students on an as-requested/needed basis, so if this is something that you’d like to spend time on – my services are included in the Dunce Academy membership. Just email me here or let Alex or one of the other Dunce counselors know you’d like to schedule a sit-down and we’ll go from there.
Thanks for your warm welcome, and I hope to meet you soon!
